High profile awards ceremonies, product launches and annual conferences on the rise

South Kensington based venue the Science Museum reveals a 160% increase in major event bookings following last year’s £1.7m investment in its corporate events spaces.

Since transforming the Museum’s IMAX cinema and the Level 1 space for corporate hire, the venue has seen a significant increase in demand for large scale events such as annual conferences, awards ceremonies and product launches. Events of this kind comprised 36% of the venue’s delivered events last year, equating to an overall growth of over 160% from 2011 to 2012.

Last year, the Science Museum invested circa £1.7 million in the refurbishment of its facilities, including the installation of new equipment for the IMAX cinema, renovations of the exterior and main concourse, as well as the installment of façade lighting, new reception desks and additional digital signage throughout the venue to enhance the corporate events offering.

The venue has recently attracted numerous high profile clients: in September 2012, the IMAX cinema set the stage for EE, the UK’s largest mobile network and owner of the Orange and T-Mobile brands, to launch its 4G network at a press conference attended by Mayor Boris Johnson. The 700 square-metre blank canvas space Level 1 was selected as the backdrop for Acer’s Windows 8 launch in October 2012 and the same space was then utilised in conjunction with the IMAX cinema as the Science Museum hosted the launch of Coca-Cola and WWF’s pan-European campaign ‘Arctic Home’ in January 2013.

Alicia Earls, communications manager – events at the Science Museum, said: “The growth in business over the past year demonstrates the success of our investments; we now have more availability to meet the requirements of the corporate event market. Unique venues are becoming increasingly sought after by event organisers, and this trend is really highlighted by the increased interest for major events in our venue.”

The Science Museum was recently shortlisted in the Conference Venue & Supplier Awards 2013 in the Best Medium Conference Venue, Best Awards Venue and Best Customer Service (over 300 delegates) categories.
