The Mermaid awarded Platinum Award in City of London’s Clean City Awards Scheme
The Mermaid Conference and Events Centre has been recognised for its waste management by City of London, taking home a Platinum Award in the 2014 Clean City Awards Scheme.
The Clean City Awards Scheme aims to raise the profile of responsible waste management and recognise and reward good practice among commercial organisations. The Mermaid was judged on waste minimisation, reuse and recycling initiatives, staff promotions and communications, methods used to reduce contamination, and smoking related litter. The site was visited by City of London officers and inspections were carried out to assess the waste management practices in place. Based on this, the venue achieved a Platinum Award.
Over the past year, The Mermaid has streamlined the business, managed orders and applied a tighter control of usage of consumables, reducing costs by 16%. The venue has also introduced continuous cost training for its staff to ensure consumption is reduced. As a result, gas and electricity costs have been reduced by 2%.
Alicia Duncan, general manager of The Mermaid, said: “We have developed a clear sustainability strategy, continuously improving our effect on the environment, market-place, community and the workplace. Being awarded a Platinum Award in the Clean City Awards Scheme is testament to the sustainability work we carry out at The Mermaid and we are delighted to receive this recognition.”
