Compass Group UK & Ireland’s Sport, Leisure and Hospitality division rewarded in UK and International Restaurant & Bar Design Awards

The design feats of Levy Restaurants, part of Compass Group UK & Ireland, came to the fore at the coveted UK and International Restaurant & Bar Design Awards on 6th September 2012. Acknowledging the best in worldwide hospitality design, the awards were judged by influential representatives from organisations including Candy & Candy, Alessi and Taschen.

Winner of the ‘Best Café or Fast Food’ category was Levy Restaurants’ The Coach House at Hatfield House. The Coach House was sensitively redesigned by SHH to create a bright and airy space for visitors to the Jacobean treasure house as well as encouraging the local market to use the space. A contemporary take on traditional materials was evident, with oak and zinc featuring high on the design agenda across the 6,000sq ft. space.

Another visitor attraction restaurant run by Levy Restaurants featured in the design ‘hotlist’ was Grasslands at Edinburgh Zoo. Drawing inspiration from the zoo’s animal habitats, the restaurant was designed to provide visitors with an informal experience, marrying the environs with ease of access for customers.

Café Liberty, designed by SHH and situated in the world famous Liberty department store on Regent Street, was also highly commended in the judges’ shortlist for ‘Restaurant or Bar in a Retail Space’. Revisiting Liberty’s art deco values, the restaurant combined reclaimed 1920s furniture and vintage lighting. The restaurant was also styled with a contemporary twist and, in a nod to the store’s fashion heritage, gentlemen’s suit fabric was used for door curtains.

Overseen by Roy Westwood, Head of Innovation for Levy Restaurants at Compass Group UK & Ireland, the business recognises the importance of progressive design in helping generate footfall and enhance guest experience at each of its historic, cultural and sporting venues. In consultation with the venues’ stakeholders, outlets are uniquely designed to attract and ‘wow’ the key target audience by creating signature spaces adding to guests enjoyment of the venue overall.
